A CPAP titration study is performed when sleep apnea has been diagnosed after the overnight sleep study.
The CPAP titration study determines the proper settings for CPAP therapy. During a CPAP titration study, the air pressure delivered via a small bedside device through a mask will be increased gradually until the apnea episode resolves and breathing becomes normal.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by repeated episodes of stoppage of airflow caused by collapse and closure of the airway. A CPAP machine is a device used to treat obstructive sleep apnea.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is used primarily to manage and treat sleep-related breathing disorders including obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP involves the placement of a mask over the nose or over the nose and mouth during sleep. A CPAP machine creates pressure that forces the air through the nasal passages to keep the airway open. This prevents snoring, airway obstruction, and drops in the oxygen level in the blood. This allows the patient to cycle normally through the different stages of sleep without awakening at night from a lack of oxygen, and to awaken in the morning feeling refreshed and alert during the day.
After your study, your doctor will refer you to a medical equipment company who will supply you with a CPAP device.
